What is Antique Mirror?
Antique mirrors have experienced deterioration, resulting in clouding, speckling, and spotting. When this process happens naturally, as the mirror ages and the environment damages the silvering, it shows its history and character. To fast forward the aging process, and avoid the 100-year wait, we create our own oxidation and tarnishing effects right from the start. The distressed look is not an immitation of the effects of aging, it's the same environmental factors, applied intentionally. The added benefit of hand-crafted antiquing is the contol over the finished look. Delicate speckling, or bold patterning can be achieved based on the application method.

Our 100 Year-Old Process
Our process continues the legacy of Coast Mirror and the craftsmen that supplied Portland with antique mirror for over 100 years. Using the original equipment and techniques that defined antique mirror production since 1911, today DT Glass is honored to keep this beautiful tradition alive and thriving in our community.

The DT Glass Difference
Antique mirror is enjoying a well-deserved resurgence in interior design. DT Glass is honored to be the only local source in the Portland area keeping the craftsmanship and tradition alive. Our mirrors are created by hand using real silver and a process that creates one-of-a-kind and completely original pieces, not machine-made imitations. With DT Glass, your mirror will be expertly designed and measured, cut to fit, antiqued by hand using a 100-year-old process, and professionally installed. No third-parties, no hand-offs, just one source, with an unwavering commitment to quality and craftsmanship.
Custom Antique Mirror vs. Standard Mirror
Where a standard mirror offers precision, antique mirror offers depth. Where a standard mirror reflects light uniformly, antique mirror shapes it, warms it, and turns it into part of the room's design.
A standard mirror is designed to be as perfect and uniform as possible. Antique mirror is not. Our custom antique mirrors are crafted, not printed. We can determine the methods used, but the results are variable.
The beauty of antique mirror is found in its unpredictable character.
Each piece is a one-of-a-kind organic creation.

Frequently Asked Questions about antique mirrors
-
We can create custom antique mirrors in any size up to 40” x 84”
-
From order acceptance to installation, our lead-time for antique mirror production is usually about 3 weeks. Be sure to allow time for planning out the project and choosing the antique design. Making decisions about the finished look can sometimes take more time than the actual production and installation.
-
We can easily create a beveled antique mirror. We simply bevel the edges of the glass before the antiquing and mirroring process is applied.
-
If you have an existing mirror with sentimental or historical value, we can carefully remove the paint and re-apply the silvering to restore the mirror. This is a delicate process and, unfortunately, we cannot guarantee the results.
-
Applying an antique finish to an existing mirror requires even more work, and therefore more expense, than creating the mirror from scratch. If the existing mirror has a lot of sentimental value, we can evaluate your needs and provide a price.
-
Most mirrors today are made with a cheaper aluminum backing. Our antique mirrors are created with actual silver to replicate the effects of historically aged mirrors.
