reasons to create a walk-in shower:

  • Accessibility - moving in and out of your shower doesn’t require operating the door, so your hands are free for grab bars or other safety features. The entrance can be any size you need for access.

  • Cleaning - there’s obviously less glass to clean, but there’s also less potential for mold and mildew because the space is more open and able to dry out after each shower.

  • Aesthetics - the open flow of a walk-in shower feels luxurious, and removing barriers - even clear barriers - always makes a room look and feel bigger

What is a walk-in shower?

Simply stated, a walk-in shower is any shower that has no door. There is no requirement that a walk-in shower also be a curbless shower, though the two are often combined because they both lead to improved accessibility. Use this page, combined with our curbless shower page, to get the benefits of both designs.

How to build it:

Building a walk-in shower may seem easy - just leave off the door! But the easy approach may not lead to great results.
Our advice: plan for excess water and moisture outside of the shower, and prepare your space accordingly

  • Carefully arrange the source of water and how it will be blocked. The area across from the shower head will get more water spray than the area next to the shower head. Rain showerheads are often easier to direct than wall showerheads.

  • Remember that water bounces off of floors, walls, and your body. The direct water spray is not the only water spray.

  • Waterproof floors and walls outside of the shower. If possible, make the entire bathroom a wet-room with fully tiled walls.

  • Consider the slope of the floor outside of the shower. You don’t want the floor slope to guide excess water out into the hallway.

  • Steam and moisture will not be enclosed in the shower. Be sure to install adequate room ventilation.

  • Showering in an open space can be cold, consider heated floors to make the room more comfortable.

Are there any drawbacks to walk-in showers?

The two complaints we hear most about walk-in showers are:
1. more water escapes from the shower than expected
2. the shower is too cold

The “too cold” complaint is the most common. Everyone knows that hot air rises, but what they may not consider is that cold air comes in to take its place. The result is a consistent breeze of cold air as the hot air floats away. This may not be your ideal way to start the day.

It can be hard to tell if you’re going to be happy with your walk-in shower. We recommend designing the shower in a way that would allow a door to be added in the future, just in case you’re not happy with the results.
